Eyes Out for Owls…

This might be a great weekend to get out and see what Owls are in your area.  This is a picture of a Great gray owl (Strix nebulosa).  We are lucky to see them near Deep Portage.  They are residents of the boreal forest.  This is the tallest owl in MN.  They dine primarily on voles, mice, shrews, and squirrels.  Distinguishing characteristics of this owl would include yellow eyes, ivory/yellow bill, and concentric circle pattern on the face.  They also sport a white feather patch that looks like a bow tie.  You might find they look a bit like  a Barred owl, but the Great gray will stand out by it’s large size and poofy feather appearance.  Happy Birding!  Winter is a great time to see some really special...
